By Zoee Hillson KUCHING: The Education Ministry should revise the double session system in schools as it has adverse effects on the education system and performance. Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) secretary-general Thomas Huo said the union deemed the double session system a “failure of implementation of education policy” in that it was a sign of serious overcrowding in schools. According to him, the ministry must focus on adding more classrooms to reduce the number of students per classroom.
Huo added that generally schools in urban areas were the ones showing signs of serious classroom shortages with over 40 students in every class. On the other hand, STU president William Ghani Bina said priority must be given to ensure effective teaching in classes in an efficient surrounding to ensure the smooth transition to school-based exam after abolishment or the UPSR and PMR examinations. “STU supports the move to go back to school-based exam. However, to ensure that these exams are more effective, the number of students per class should ideally be around 25 students per class,” he said during a press conference after the exco meeting yesterday. Overcrowded classrooms had affected teachers’ ability to connect and communicate with students during lessons.
“Our primary schools have 30 minutes per session. How could teachers give 55 students their fullest attention during that period? “There’s no human touch, teachers might not even know the name of their students. No human touch is just like listening to the radio,” he said. Ghani remarked that the country’s goal of becoming the centre of academic excellence might not be realised soon because of the underlying problems faced by its education system.
“STU suggests to the government to build multi-storey school building in urban areas to reduce the cost of purchasing more lands while rural schools can expand sideways,” he said. Ghani said the biggest challenge in the teaching profession right now was double session, introduced in the 1970s when there was a sudden surge in number of students entering secondary schools after the Sarawak Common Entrance exams was replaced by the UPSR. According to him, the state has 1,264 primary schools, 177 secondary schools and four teacher training colleges. July 5, 2010, Monday KUCHING: Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) hopes the government will give out overseas education scholarships and loans to aspiring English teachers. Its president William Ghani Bina said the government should not think twice on investing in the nation’s education because the county’s progress towards a high-income economy lies with an improved education system.
“We want the government to know that they should not look at money used for training as a waste, look at it as an investment. Education is not an expense, it is an investment,” he told a press conference at Wisma STU yesterday. He added that the government should emphasise on training local English teachers to improve the people’s employability in the job market. “Even if students are good academically, but if they do not have a strong hold on English, their quest for rewarding jobs would be a frustrating journey,” he said. Ghani also commented that STU was not in favour of the government’s move in bringing foreign teachers into the country to teach English to teachers and students. “For short term purposes, it’s okay. However, I still believe that it is more beneficial for the country in the long run if we send our people overseas,” he said.
Ghani suggested that the government should instead set up a language training centre or declare some of the current teachers training colleges as language training centres to train local English teachers. “If they bring 300 foreign teachers into the country, it would be very expensive.
Furthermore, how many students can they teach? They might not understand our locals,” remarked Ghani. He emphasised that the government needed to consider the matter seriously because English is the ‘language of knowledge’ and the job market requires a strong grasp of the language. On the other hand, STU secretary general Thomas Huo added that the key to achieving a high-income economy was to invest in the people’s education and knowledge. “Invest more money on the people. When they have the right skills and capabilities, then can we have higher income,” he said.
Huo said the root cause of low productivity in Malaysia was the lack of schools and the under-developed education system. According to him, the low standard of education would hamper the nation’s move towards a high-income economy.. Tuesday July 6, 2010 I READ with great interest the letter “” ( The Star, May 31). The issue raised deserves immediate attention and must be addressed in order to stem the decline in English proficiency among Malaysian students. I studied in a Kebangsaan school for 11 years and grammar was never taught properly.
The problem lies in how English is being taught in schools while other factors like infrequent use of the language at home can also be a contributing factor. The importance of the English language cannot be trivialised. It is not only important as a means of communications on a daily basis, but also a powerful tool to communicate knowledge.
In order to use the language correctly, one has to learn or be taught English grammar adequately. But grammar was never taught in secondary school. The little exposure we had in school was, in no small part, thanks to my primary school English teacher Mrs Theivan. When I enrolled in secondary school, I have no recollection whatsoever of having ever been taught grammar except for the time when I took extra classes for Literature in English and was berated by my tutor for my bad grammar.
Some teachers don’t even know grammar. I experienced this during my school days and this problem must be made known to the public.
The ministry says teachers are well trained. It is probably referring to a minority as some are well trained. The problem is with the majority.
In general, Malaysians’ command of English is far from satisfactory. This reflects poorly on the teaching of English in school but this does not mean that individuals themselves are not to blame. Personal effort must accompany proper education in order for an individual to be proficient in English. Since these two factors are inseparable, it is obvious that self initiative alone is not sufficient if English is not taught properly in schools. The National Union of Teaching Profession should see to this matter immediately and should table a proposal aimed at improving the teaching of English in schools. My parents came from a time when learning English was given due emphasis.
Grammar was never an alien factor in the teaching and learning process. My parents say times have changed dramatically. The way English is being taught in schools now is one such example. What is the point of extending the hours of English classes in schools when the problem lies in the unwillingness to recognise that the teaching methodology is lacking in some ways? NICHOLAS CHEONG, Ipoh.
July 4, 2010, Sunday TAWAU: The state Education Department has taken disciplinary action against 267 teachers in the state, said the director Dr Muhiddin Yusin. Show-cause letters had been issued to the teachers, but 117 of them had not received their letters, he said. These teachers, who are the educators, should uphold good discipline instead of coming late to school, escaping classes and not carrying out their tasks, he said when officiating at the district-level Teachers’ Day at Raflesia Hall of Teachers Education Institute here yesterday morning. “We should ensure that teachers follow the stated tasks and responsibility in their work. I will have a working visit and monitor each school spontaneously.
“It is a must to make changes, so that the teaching profession could become more relevant and highly respected by the people. All the teachers should not neglect to carry out their responsibilities and continue to equip themselves with more knowledge in various subjects,” he said. According to Muhiddin, the teachers should not only improve themselves in teaching the youngsters, but should also have excellent behaviours and attitudes. In this globalisation era, the teachers should be more proactive to generate a knowledgeable generation and build more good human capital as a whole. In the ceremony, Mazlan Abdullah, Abdawah Assanda and Lim Vo Chin were declared as the best teachers, while the top school of the year award went to SMK Kinabutan and SK Bombalai.
