Sonderzug Nach Pankow Instrumental Beats
Stitches by Glen Huser Travis is a junior high-schooler who lives in a double-decker trailer-home in Acton, Alberta with his aunt Kitaleen and her family while his mum, a country-western singer, is on the road. He has inherited his aunt’s passion for sewing, and with the help of his best friend Chantelle, channels this into puppet-construction. Unfortunately, Travis has spent most of his life as the number one target of a local bully, Shon Docker, who beats him up repeatedly for being a fairy and a faggot and the many other choice terms for homosexual that occupy every bigot’s vocabulary. As Travis works at putting together a production of Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shon’s attacks grow more and more violent.
The story culminates around the high of the successful puppet play, and the low of Shon’s final, most violent attack on Travis. There are a number of things about this book that work for me. The secondary characters are well developed and manage to be quirky without being excessively so.

Unlike many children’s writers, Huser does not redeem all of the cruel characters. He allows that, in the real world, many people are not likely to change their ways and come to be more accepting. While this may not be the most optimistic perspective, it is refreshingly realistic. Chantelle’s brothers are tough, rude, and like to drink, but they are also kind and gentle with their little sister, and quick to defend her and her friends.
They dispense their own sort of justice, based on fierce family loyalty and their own concept of right and wrong. Considering the number of secondary characters in children’s books who fall into stereotype and are either too good, or too bad to be believed, this is a relief. This book provides an intriguing examination of gender roles at the junior high-school level. It is never explicitly stated in the book that Travis is queer; at that age, Travis himself might not even understand his own sexuality yet. He is a “round peg in a square hole,” as his mother says, but he has not yet fully explored what this means. The central issue in this book is not homosexuality but rather the way people treat those who do not fit into conventional gender roles.
I think this, and a number of other recent young adult books, demonstrate a shift in the way issues of sexuality are perceived and treated in children’s literature. Children’s literature, as a genre, is often conservative and the attitudes portrayed in the books generally are a few years behind the times. If books like this one are anything to go by, then homosexuality and alternative gender roles just might be becoming, in the younger generation, an accepted part of life, and bullies like Shon and his gang in this novel might be becoming to be the exception rather than the rule. Hi, Piano_Forever1, You love your Piano, really? Well: Why don't you make it 'swing' and 'ring'? Even, if it's only a virtual General MIDI-Instrument? May I show you a few ways to enhance the sound you get? Don't be afraid, MuseScore won't bite, and your PC and your score won't be deleted or destroyed! First: I'm no Pianoplayer at all, only a autodidact, amateur and dilettante with a 61-Keys-Midi-keyboard.
When I'm playin' real life music, it's Folk and (Country-) Blues on Accoustic Guitar and Harmonica. But let's take a look, what we can do to the 'Sonderzug'. It is still at I downloaded a copy of your file and did all the following changes, (I can send you the results - if you have a mailbox-adress for me.) Load this score into MuseScore for some soundchecks, please, and play it once. When that is done, let's do some changes a) First change: A little faster, please! - Go to the very first staff, first measure, first note. Mark this note with a 'LMB' = Left Mouse Button-Click - Go to the lefthand palette [F9] and open the pulldown-menu 'Tempo' - Click double on 'crotchet = 80' (=80 Beats/Minute) - this will appear over the first measure - Doubleclick that tempo-text over your staff with LMB. A cursor will appear in that tempo-text.
Use the PC-keyboard to change 80 into 160 - Finish with an [Esc]-Button. - Let it play again. Now, the Sonderzug will run at double speed (that's an express-train!) b) Second change: Swing it! (It won't mean a thing, if you ain't got the swing!) - Go to the very first staff, first measure, first note. Mark this note with a 'LMB' = Left Mouse Button-Click - Go to the lefthand palette [F9] and open the pulldown-menu 'Text' - Click double on 'Swing' - this will appear over the first measure - Finish with an [Esc]-Button. - Let it play again. Now 'Sonderzug' will no longer run as 'shuffle', but with 'swung triplet notes' c) Third change: Mix it!
Use the sound-mixer [F10] - Choose Instrument-Sounds here from the Pulldown-Menu. Try 'Yamaha Grand' or 'Honky Tonk' or 'Legend' - change defaults to [Vol]-ume (75%), [Bal]-ance (50%), [Rev]-erb (50%) and [Cho]-rus (50%) - Let it play again. There will be much enhanced sound.
But we can do even more! D) Fourth change: Second Piano with the same notes, but another sound - Go to the very first staff, first measure, first note. - Use [Ctrl]/[A] to select all notes in all staves/measures. - Use [Ctrl]/[C] for a 'Copy' in RAM ('Clipboard-Copy' or 'OLE-Obect') (Keep that for further tests!) - Finish with an [Esc]-Button.
- Go to the very first staff, first measure, first note. - Use the key [i] to call up the Instruments-menu - Open 'Keyboards' in the left window, select Piano (2 Staves) in the left window and use [Add] and [OK]-Buttons - Now there should be a second pair of Piano-Staves (Sopran/Bass-Clef) in your score. - Go to the very first (empty) staff for this second piano, first measure, first rest. - Mark this rest with a 'LMB' = Left Mouse Button-Click - Use [Ctrl]/[V] for a inserting a 'Copy' from RAM (OLE-Obect) Now, there should be two pianos with the same notes! - Use the sound-mixer [F10] again - Choose different Instrument-Sounds here from the Pulldown-Menu. Try 'Yamaha Grand' and 'Honky Tonk'. - Use Balance (0%) for first, balance (100%) for second piano - Let it play again.
There will be much enhanced sound in stereo. But we can do even more! E) Fifth change:Second Piano with the same notes, but a little phase-shifted - Delete all Notes for the second Piano - Go to the very first (empty) staff for this second piano, first measure, first rest. - Mark this rest with a 'LMB' = Left Mouse Button-Click - Use the Key- Sequence [N] [1] (.
