Unofficial 2.02 FAQ Rise of the Witch-King the way it should be. What is Unofficial 2.02?
Unofficial 2.02 (U2.02) is the latest patch for The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth Two: The Rise of the Witch-King (Rotwk). Where can I download Unofficial 2.02? Why should I play Unofficial 2.02 instead of Official 2.01? U2.02 corrects numerous bugs that were present in 2.01, and greatly improves the balance of the game. What do you mean when you say this patch isn't official? This patch is not supported by EA. That's why you aren't required to use it online.
However, it is supported by GameReplays and is mandatory for participation in Clanwars. Why isn't the patch official? EA is unwilling at this time to put in the effort to test the patch. An official patch would cost EA significant time and money, because they would have to pay their programmers and testers, whereas our patch was made by volunteers. While we have done all the work for them, they would still have to test every change themselves, and EA considers this a waste of money. Contrary to rumor, EA has not refused to accept our patch because it isn't 'good.'
Would EA have done a better job? Actually, in order to save money, EA's plan for a patch (announced months ago and never pursued) includes only twenty changes, insignificant compared to the improvements included in this patch. Additionally, EA staff members would be unable to balance the game as well as those who actually play the game. How well has the patch been tested? Thoroughly, over the course of over four months, and by some of the best players in the game. While there were a few bugs in the initial release, they will soon be automatically updated, and are insignificant compared to those present in 2.01.
Who made this patch, and what qualifications did they have to do this? Many of the best players in Rise of the Witch-King worked very to bring this patch to you. A full list of credits can be viewed at the bottom of this FAQ. Who plays U2.02? Nearly all competitive Rotwk players have switched to U2.02.
However, competitive players are a minority in all online games, so overall, most players currently play 2.01. Will this patch ever become official? Possibly, although this is, at this time, unlikely. U2.02 is only likely to become official if a large segment of players begin using U2.02 instead of 2.01.
We hope that by splintering the community as much as possible, we will force EA to realize the scope of our efforts and actually patch their game. That means that if you want this balanced patch to become official, you have to play it! How does U2.02 change the game? In small ways. U2.02 does not add any extra features to Rotwk, but instead improves on what is already there.
Games should, for the most part, play as they did before; however, now it is advantageous to use a more diversified army than previously. There were problems with balance in 2.01?

The most important of which was that in 2.01, the dwarven faction was overpowered, and very difficult to beat if the players were of the same skill level. Additionally, many new units were added to the game in the Rotwk expansion that were significantly underpowered and, put bluntly, a complete waste of money in 2.01, such as dire wolves, dwarven zealots, black numenorians, and half-troll swordsmen. In U2.02, all units can be used to some purpose.
For example, dire wolves can now be used to counter pikemen. Finally, some units were far too strong in 2.01.
For example, an army of only mordor orc archers with leadership was previously an incredibly strong force. In U2.02, orc archers are still very good, but they can be defeated if they do not have support from orc swordsmen. There were bugs in 2.01? If you scroll through the, you will see many more you may or may not have noticed that have been fixed. Many more will be fixed in a forthcoming update.
There were a lot of bugs in 2.01 that you probably didn't notice. Most notably, lindon horse archers had effectively infinite trample, fire logic caused game.dat errors, there were illogical fluctuations in the cost to revive heroes, and the Isengard power Freezing Rain was available after the wrong powers on the powerpoint tree. Many other lesser issues have been or will be fixed as well. Does this mean I can't play with 2.01 players anymore? You cannot play 2.01 players while the U2.02 patch is active. Unfortunately, that means you can't play tournament, either.
Is it hard to find games on U2.02? At the time of writing this FAQ, it is very difficult to find people to play U2.02. However, if you are reading this, it is probably because you noticed someone else playing or advertising the patch.
We hope U2.02 will continue to grow in popularity until it is easier to play than 2.01. This is only possible if you continue to play U2.02, even though there are currently fewer U2.02 games than 2.01 games. When the patch was initially released, many players downloaded it, then switched back to 2.01 when they realized not as many people played it. This made it difficult for other players to find a game, and they, too, were forced to switch back to 2.01.
If, however, players stick with the U2.02 patch, this will not occur again. Can I switch back to 2.01 after I install U2.02? While we recommend playing U2.02 instead of 2.01, if you so wish you can load 2.01 via the patch launcher that comes with the patch. What if my game isn't the English version?
In English games, changes have been made to the descriptions of altered abilities where appropriate. If you have a foreign language version of the game, these descriptions will not have been changed from 2.01, even though the actual abilities have. However, this has no affect on actual gameplay, and is only temporary. Appropriate translations will soon be available for French, Spanish, Polish, and Dutch versions of the game, and more will be released in time. We encourage players of foreign-language games to download this patch now. Where can I find the changelog? The changelog is currently available in.
I heard there were problems with the patch launcher? Many people have experienced problems reverting to 2.01 through the patch launcher. While this is not generally a problem, if you are experiencing these difficulties, instructions on reverting to 2.01 should you so choose can be found. Will there be updates to the patch?
Some remaining balance issues and bugs will be fixed in a future update. The patch will update itself automatically when you load the launcher. Tentative future updates may be viewed. I have other questions! If you are a member of Gamereplays, post them in this thread, and they will be answered!
If not, and you don't wish to join, somebody will probably be able to answer your questions ingame in either the '2v2' or the 'Clans' lobby.
